Vascular tortuosity isn’t just a clinical observation, it’s a potential predictive marker for retinal vein occlusions (RVO). Traditionally, assessing tortuosity has been subjective, relying heavily on clinician interpretation. But what if we could quantify it, precisely, consistently, and automatically?
At Care1, our AI Research Team is transforming that question into reality.
In image segmentation, AI learns to classify different pixels on a picture, based on what it represents.
This technology mirrors how the human brain processes patterns but with the consistency and scale that only machine learning can deliver.

Our research began with a simple premise: could AI segmentation be used to measure vascular tortuosity mathematically?
Starting with a fundus photo (Image 1), the AI identifies and maps retinal blood vessels (Image 2).

In image segmentation, AI learns to classify different pixels on a picture, based on what it represents. From there, we calculate a Tortuosity Score, a numerical value representing vessel curvature and complexity.
For example, a score of 1.21 quantifies the degree of twisting or bending within the vessels. Tracking this score over time could reveal subtle vascular changes before a clinical event occurs.
Imagine being able to predict a retinal vein occlusion before symptoms appear, enabling early intervention, closer monitoring, or even preventive treatments such as ASA therapy.
This is more than an academic experiment, it’s the foundation of predictive analytics in ophthalmology.
By turning subjective observations into quantifiable data, we empower eye care professionals with tools that enhance diagnostic accuracy and patient outcomes.
Our team is now actively validating and refining this model for integration into the Care1 platform, where AI insights and clinical expertise meet to redefine the future of shared care.
We’re building the next generation of AI tools for eye care — and we want your input. If you have an innovative idea or challenge that AI could help solve, our Care1 AI Research Team wants to hear from you. Email us at hello@care1.ca.
